Who we are

A trusted bridge between our corporate and institutional clients

Enabling companies to access capital to drive growth and fulfil their ambitions. An integrated business – our corporate, sales, trading and research teams stand together. Through establishing long-term and valued relationships, we deliver a quality and tailored service.

What we do

For our 60 or so listed corporate clients, in addition to acting as broker, we also provide financial advice and offer Sponsor and Nomad services for Main Market and AIM companies. Critically, we enable companies to access capital to drive growth and fulfil their ambitions. Since January 2016 we have been involved in over 70 transactions with a total value of over £3.9 billion.  For private, unlisted businesses we work with Capital for Business which is our Appointed Representative

We have dealing relationships with around 200 UK institutional investors for whom we provide in-depth, quality advice and trading services. Our research on our retained corporate clients is distributed broadly and widely to institutional investors under the MiFID II carve-out and we have direct research contracts with a number of institutional clients to access all our research and related services.

How we do it

All areas of the firm – sales, trading, research and corporate finance & broking – work together to provide a fully integrated service which is tailored to the needs of our corporate clients, in a way that also helps their shareholders – our institutional clients – make money. Corporate broking done well is about relationships rather than transactions: taking the long view, not acting expediently; about teamwork not individuals and, above all, acting with integrity.

Our Focus

We are focused on high-growth small and mid-cap companies and investment funds. While as a firm we are unashamedly generalist in nature, research, which is a key component of our integrated offering, has a sector dimension. We have highly-respected, seasoned analysts who are experts in investment funds, technology & media, property & construction, oil & gas and mining as well as more generalist analysts focusing on high-growth smaller companies.

Vice Admiral Stockdale

Our Philosophy

In 2015 we fundamentally altered the structure and approach of our business in response to cumulative and long-running changes in the environment in which we operate and which we correctly foresaw would be brought to a head by the implementation of MiFID II. While we still provide all of the services that we did before, generally we now only provide those services for and in our retained corporate clients [It's Stockbroking But Not As We Know It].

To mark this change the business was renamed Stockdale Securities. We chose the name Stockdale because we liked it and because of our belief in the ‘Stockdale Paradox’. US Admiral Jim Stockdale spent 7 years as the highest-ranking officer in the ‘Hanoi Hilton’ – the North Viet Cong prisoner of war camp. Years later when being interviewed by Jim Collins, the Admiral described what he had learnt from the experience in these terms – “You must never ever confuse the need for absolute, unwavering faith that you can and will prevail in the end, regardless of the difficulties, with the need for the discipline to confront the brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be” – which Collins coined the Stockdale Paradox

Stockdale is a private company and staff own 45% of the business. Our main shareholder is Somers Ltd, which is an investment holding company specialising in the financial services sector with UK investments in asset management, asset financing and stockbroking. Somers’ shareholder equity as of 30 June 2018 was US$378m. The funds which control Somers’ have been clients of the business for 15 years.
